JUNEAU - Today, Representative Geran Tarr introduced legislation to bring voter participation into the 21st Century through a simple online system. Under the proposal, voters could sign in to the existing Legislative information database, BASIS, using their social and professional media accounts. From there, Alaskans could respectfully comment on bills, vote bills up or down, and share their ideas for new legislation or amendments.

PRESS RELEASE: Democrats Push Same Day Voter Registration: Want More People Voting, Not Fewer

(JUNEAU) - Today a group of Democrats announced they are filing a bill to increase the number of Alaskans who vote. Their bill will allow Alaskans to register the same day they vote. The bill contrasts with efforts we saw leading up to the 2012 election. That effort was pushed by the corporate-funded GOP leaning group American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and others to lower voter turnout by requiring additional forms of identification not currently required in Alaska. ALEC is funded by companies like the foreign drug-maker Bayer, drug-maker Abbott Labs, and over a hundred large corporations.

One of the most important things the Legislature deals with is taxes
for oil and gas. The reason it’s so important is because approximately 80 to 90 percent of the State of Alaska’s general fund revenues come from these taxes. That means oil and gas revenues are responsible for funding schools, building roads and all the other things the government does for Alaskans.
This week, the Anchorage Daily News ran an opinion piece I wrote describing why it’s a bad idea to change our current structure.

Rep. Petersen’s Report from the Capitol: Voter Registration Open Over the Weekend!

On November 6th, your vote will be your voice as an American citizen. It is your chance to shape your community and hold elected officials accountable. The last day to register to vote or change your registration is Sunday, October 7th. The Division of Elections regional offices in Anchorage are open over the weekend to assist with registrations.
If you haven’t registered to vote or need to update your registration, the Region II Elections office at 2525 Gambell Street, Suite 100 is open this weekend on Saturday from 10 am-4pm and Sunday from 12-4pm. If you’re not sure of your registration status, you can click here to check. You can also register with an online application on the Alaska Division of Elections website which you can submit your application by email, mail, or fax. See you at the polls!
