PRESS RELEASE: Democrats Push Same Day Voter Registration: Want More People Voting, Not Fewer

(JUNEAU) – Today a group of Democrats announced they are filing a bill to increase the number of Alaskans who vote. Their bill will allow Alaskans to register the same day they vote. The bill contrasts with efforts we saw leading up to the 2012 election. That effort was pushed by the corporate-funded GOP leaning group American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and others to lower voter turnout by requiring additional forms of identification not currently required in Alaska. ALEC is funded by companies like the foreign drug-maker Bayer, drug-maker Abbott Labs, and over a hundred large corporations.

Rep. Kerttula’s Newsletter: Oil & Gas Taxes: Give Oil Companies the Right Incentives

One of the most important things the Legislature deals with is taxes
for oil and gas. The reason it’s so important is because approximately 80 to 90 percent of the State of Alaska’s general fund revenues come from these taxes. That means oil and gas revenues are responsible for funding schools, building roads and all the other things the government does for Alaskans.

This week, the Anchorage Daily News ran an opinion piece I wrote describing why it’s a bad idea to change our current structure.

Thank you for reading my newsletter. I appreciate hearing from you, so please stop by the office, call, write or email.

Rep. Kawasaki’s Juneau Note: Healy Clean Coal Plant, Make Your Vote Count, PFD Time

Success: Compromise Reached on Healy Coal Restart

I applaud the decision reached between the Environmental Protection Agency, Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority, and Golden Valley Electrical Association to move forward with the restart of the dormant coal plant in Healy. For years I have supported the restart of the plant, under the stipulation that it could be accomplished in an environmentally responsible, efficient manner that kept the best interests of the ratepayers under consideration. I believe the terms of this exciting announcement does exactly that, and can finally offer Fairbanks some tangible relief from burdensome energy bills without ignoring the need to address our air quality challenges.

Note from Rep. Gara: Oct. 7 Voter Registration Deadline: Tell Your Friends and Family!

Do you think multinational corporations should have more of a vote than you and your family? I know the answer is NO. So – if you’re not registered to vote; need to update your address; or have friends and family who need to do that, please tell them. Because today we live in a world where multinational corporations can donate as much as they want. Your power is your vote.

In this letter I’ll give you voter registration information to use or pass along. And with a 30 day blackout on legislative newsletters before the election, I’ll pack in a few more things.

2012 Session Accomplishments

This year I was successful in helping pass several important pieces of legislation to create jobs for Alaskans, make sure children with autism can get the treatment they need, protect crime victims’ rights, and improve early childhood education opportunities. I have a short video that highlights what we accomplished for East Anchorage this year, and I hope you’ll take a couple of minutes to watch it.
