Yesterday, the Alaska Legislature passed fully funded budgets for the next fiscal year that remove the threat of the first ever government shutdown in Alaska. The operating and capital budgets were passed with significant support from members of the Alaska Independent Democratic Coalition after weeks of bipartisan negotiations between the Minority and Majority Caucuses in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Last evening the Second Session of the 29thAlaska Legislature came to a close without any significant action to address the ongoing fiscal crisis. The Legislature failed to pass the FY 2017 Operating Budget, putting thousands of state workers at risk of being laid off.

Rep. Guttenberg’s Newsletter: Medicaid Lawsuit Update
In March, the Superior Court of Alaska dismissed the lawsuit to stop Medicaid expansion, stating that Governor Walker acted within the boundaries of the law when he bypassed the legislature to go forth with the expansion. Recently, the Legislature filed an appeal of that decision. I do not support this action.

Last week, after dozens of hearings, the House passed SB 91, a bill relating to criminal justice reform. I support this legislation and believe that SB 91 is smart on crime because it reduces recidivism, yet maintains that offenders are accountable for their actions.
