NEWS: Legislation Filed to Inflation Proof the Base Student Allocation
JUNEAU – Representative Les Gara (D-Anchorage) has filed legislation to raise education funding to account for inflation since last year’s education budget. The bill sets the base student allocation at $5,979 in FY 2016. That’s an increase of $149, which is the amount the non-partisan Legislative Research Division says is needed to inflation proof education funding from last year.

NEWS: House Approves Legislation to Remove Barriers to Employment for Veterans in Alaska
JUNEAU – Today, the Alaska House of Representatives unanimously passed House Bill 6 that allows private employers to give a hiring preference to veterans. Every state has a veterans hiring preference in place for public employment. However, private employers are not permitted to offer the same benefit without violating federal law. The legislation is sponsored by Representative Chris Tuck (D-Anchorage) and is supported by the United States Department of Defense.
