NEWS: Knik Arm Bridge Should Be Removed from Transportation Priority List
Anchorage – Representatives Les Gara (D-Anchorage) and Harriet Drummond (D-Anchorage) encourage the public to comment on the need to stop wasteful spending on the proposed Knik Arm Crossing project. The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities is accepting public comments until Friday, August 19th on whether the roughly $2 billion bridge project should be removed from the current state transportation priority list.

NEWS: Rep. Gara Bill Targets a Major Oil Company Subsidy to Generate Budget Savings
Juneau – Representative Les Gara (D-Anchorage) intends to file legislation this week to stop a large oil company subsidy that increases the budget deficit. The bill has been filed with the House Clerk and will be officially introduced on Wednesday.

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) has announced a change in the boundaries for its regions. Currently, DOT&PF has the state divided into the Central, Northern, and Southeast Regions. The Southeast Region will be renamed the “Coastal Region” and it will be expanded to include the majority of the coastal communities along the gulf and out the chain. However, those coastal communities that are connected to the state highway system that are under the Central Region or the Northern Region will remain under those regions.

One the most dangerous pieces of Alaska’s highway infrastructure is the Glenn Highway/ Muldoon overpass right here in East Anchorage. The opening of the Tikahtnu Commons mall has made this already dangerous intersection even worse, and Senator Bill Wielechowski and I worked hard to secure the funding to start the process to fix this intersection. Unfortunately Governor Parnell vetoed this funding. While I agree that budget vetoes had to be made, I found this one to be baffling since this is a state owned intersection that clearly needs to be fixed.

Rogers Park Community Council members were concerned to learn that the DOWL HKM representative scheduled on the agenda had sent regrets and was unable to appear because she did not yet have written permission from the Department of Transportation (DOT) to talk with us about the U-Med Northern Access Project.
