News: Proposed Cuts to Public Education Funding Dangerous and Unacceptable

Juneau – Education is Alaska’s best investment and the members of the Alaska Independent Democratic Coalition adamantly object to a proposal to reduce public education funding by over 18 percent. The House Finance Budget Subcommittee for the Department of Education and Early Development approved the FY 2016 budget proposal Tuesday night despite the objections of Rep. NEWS: Rep. Gara and Rep.-Elect Ortiz Seek to End Excessive Alaska Student Loan Rates

Juneau – Rep. Les Gara (D-Anchorage) and Rep.-Elect Dan Ortiz (I-Ketchikan) are pre-filing legislation to lower Alaska’s exorbitant student loan rate, which negatively impacts students chances for higher education and job training.
“We want to give Alaskans an incentive to bring needed job skills back to the state,” said Rep. Gara, who made it through college thanks, in part, to scholarships, work, and low interest loans. “We don’t want high student loan debt to discourage students from staying or returning to Alaska to work.”

The UAS/high school course “Introduction to Mining Occupations and Operations” will start on Monday January 26, 2015, be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:15 - 6:00 pm, and will conclude on April 15. The University awards 3 UAS credits to students who successfully complete the course and provides full scholarship to pay all the costs of the course.

Note from Rep. Gara: Some ABCs on Volunteering To Help Alaska’s Students

I wasn’t thrilled that the Legislature continued three years of educator cuts for yet another three years. In Anchorage we’ll lose roughly 400, or more, staff over the next three years, on top of over 600 staff lost statewide since 2011. While I voted to reverse these party-line cuts, it doesn’t mean we can’t work as individuals to help increase student opportunity, even if a majority of your elected leaders won’t.
