Rep. Sam Kito's newsletter Yesterday, the Legislature adjourned, which should have been cause for relief (or celebration), but wasn’t. Here’s why: the Legislature passed a budget that is not fully funded – which means the state would run out of money before the next session. Despite days of negotiating, we were unable to reach an agreement on a budget that works for all Alaskans. As a result, Governor Walker called us back into a special session, starting today, Tuesday, April 28 at 10 am.

Rep. Kerttula’s Juneau Newsletter: Special Session Over, Budget Vetoes Done

It’s been almost a month since my last e-news and a lot has happened in that time. My office grew by two members: Anna White joined my staff during the special session and early this month, she gave birth to baby boy Quinlan. My husband Jim Powell received his PhD from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in Natural Resources and Sustainability in mid-May. I am immensely proud of all the work he put into achieving this goal. Because it’s been a while since my last newsletter, I’ll catch you up on the major legislative events that have occurred in the meantime. After a particularly exciting few days during special session, it finally ended with a whimper rather than a bang early Monday evening. Also, the governor released his line-item vetoes of the capital and operating budgets and I’ll share more detail below.

Note from Rep. Gara: I’m Back and Reporting for Duty Sir / Ma’am!

Sorry I’ve been out of touch for a bit. As you may know, I had to leave Juneau a few days into special session for surgery, which turned out great. I’m on my way home today - to the relief of my nephews who’ve been humoring me, and listening to me gripe about the Red Sox for two and a half weeks. They’re Yankee fans. Booo!
