NEWS: Gara: More Teacher Layoffs Won’t Fix Alaska’s Near-Bottom Graduation Rates

JUNEAU – Today, Representative Les Gara (D-Anchorage) responded to a recent study that found Alaska ranks near the bottom of state rankings in high school graduation rates. Gara, who joined other Democratic lawmakers in pushing to reverse Alaska’s course of educator cuts, tied Alaska’s slow progress on improving graduation rates to three years of teacher and staff layoffs, a problem the Legislature failed to address this session.

We have finally finished work in the 28th legislative session after ninety–five days. Our work continued beyond the statutory 90-day limit imposed by the voters in the 2006 election. I am grateful for all of the communication and support I have received from District 32 during my short time in this position. In addition to the Operating and Capital budgets we passed this year, there were several pieces of important legislation that were considered, passed, or left on the table.

Rep. Tuck’s Community Connection: Extended Session Fails our Kids on Education

Today on the fifth day of a regrettable and unnecessary extended session the Legislature adjourned sine die. Although state law requires the legislature to conclude legislative sessions within 90 days, the Alaska Constitution allows them to extend for up to 120 days. After that, the legislature must go into special session if there are remaining issues that must be resolved.
