Rep. Geran Tarr On May 9, 2014, the Anchorage Police gathered with Troopers, the Coast Guard, local firefighters, and members of the public to commemorate Alaska Police Memorial Day. The ceremony honored the 65 men and women who have died in the line of service in Alaska, and a program was handed out so that those who gathered could learn about the departed. I attended this beautiful ceremony at the Alaska Police Memorial off of Tudor, along with Senator Hollis French and representatives from the police department, the fire department, and the U.S. Coast Guard.

NEWS: Gara: More Teacher Layoffs Won’t Fix Alaska’s Near-Bottom Graduation Rates

Rep. Les Gara JUNEAU – Today, Representative Les Gara (D-Anchorage) responded to a recent study that found Alaska ranks near the bottom of state rankings in high school graduation rates. Gara, who joined other Democratic lawmakers in pushing to reverse Alaska’s course of educator cuts, tied Alaska’s slow progress on improving graduation rates to three years of teacher and staff layoffs, a problem the Legislature failed to address this session.

Rep. Tarr’s Newsletter: End of Session

Rep. Geran Tarr The Legislature adjourned today, five days after the 90-day statutory limit. We went into overtime to try and get it right on education. The omnibus education bill passed and I am extremely disappointed that the final bill will result in cuts for the Anchorage School District.
