Note from Rep. Gara: Some ABCs on Volunteering To Help Alaska’s Students

Rep. Les Gara I wasn’t thrilled that the Legislature continued three years of educator cuts for yet another three years. In Anchorage we’ll lose roughly 400, or more, staff over the next three years, on top of over 600 staff lost statewide since 2011. While I voted to reverse these party-line cuts, it doesn’t mean we can’t work as individuals to help increase student opportunity, even if a majority of your elected leaders won’t.

NEWS: Rep. Tarr Applauds New Fairbanks Borough School Policy

Rep. Geran Tarr Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) today welcomed the Fairbanks North Star Borough School Board’s unanimous adoption of “Erin’s Policy.” The measure directs the district to teach students techniques for recognizing and reporting sexual abuse, and train teachers and staff to recognize signs of abuse and how to respond to them. The Board approved the policy at their meeting Tuesday night.

Note from Rep. Gara: Foster Care Numbers Spike, Need for Laptops Rises; Good East High Stadium Progress

Rep. Les Gara As you know, we’ve spearheaded a volunteer effort with Facing Foster Care in Alaska to get the word out that foster youth face yet another disadvantage in life. Many of them – probably most – don’t have a computer to do school work with. We want foster youth to succeed. That’s both our job as the legal guardian of Alaska’s foster youth, and the moral thing to do.
