This week the House Finance Committee will be taking testimony on the state operating budget. I serve on three Finance subcommittees which passed recommended budgets for the University of Alaska and the departments of Revenue and Labor and Workforce Development. The Finance Committee has compiled the department budgets into one budget and will be taking testimony from across the state this week. Now it is your turn to make your voice heard on the budget. The Finance Committee will be taking testimony from Fairbanks from 1 to 4 pm on Wednesday (March 4) at the Fairbanks Legislative Information Office at 1292 Saddler Way.

JUNEAU – On Tuesday, the Alaska Department of Natural Resources approved a revised royalty modification for the proposed Nuna development on the North Slope. Late last year Rep. Les Gara (D-Anchorage) submitted detailed public comments about the proposed modification and asked for a review of the royalty modification by the administration of Governor Walker.

An ongoing theme from last year’s session is the attempt to cut the public out of the state’s decision-making process. I was opposed to HB 77 (one of last year’s most contentious bills) from its inception. I was proud of the public uproar over that bill. Alaskans’ voices always deserve to be heard. HB 77 is on the move again as well as another bill that aims to reduce public involvement (HB 47).
