Today, Senator Hollis French and Representative Les Gara (both D-Anchorage) sent a letter to the Army Corps of Engineers, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state regulators urging the agencies to ensure timely issuance of necessary wetlands and other permits, so that work can begin at the Point Thomson Unit this winter.

Legislator calls for increased federal permitting capacity to keep local energy solutions on track
Today, Representative Berta Gardner (D-Anchorage) questioned whether Southcentral energy supplies would be delayed due to a lack of permitting capacity in federal agencies in charge of issuing Cook Inlet oil and gas permits. Citing Apache Corp.’s recent decision to suspend its Cook Inlet exploration due to delayed federal permits, Rep. Gardner called on Alaska’s congressional delegation to work with federal agencies to review whether staffing in the Kenai offices of these agencies needs to be increased to keep up with the resurgence of energy exploration in Cook Inlet.

Program Gives Local Citizens Voices in Development Decisions
Alaska Representative David Guttenberg (D-Fairbanks) today endorsed Ballot Measure No. 2, which would re-establish Alaska’s coastal management program. Guttenberg emphasized his support of coastal management in a letter to constituents. He urged Alaskans to join him in voting for Ballot Measure No. 2 in the August 28, 2012 Primary Election.

Today, House Democratic Leader Beth Kerttula (D-Juneau) released the following statement after learning of the passing of longtime Alaska statesman, Al Adams:
“Today, along with all of Alaska, the House Democratic Caucus mourns the passing of Senator Al Adams. There will never be another Al Adams. His legendary public service, his inimitable sense of humor, and his great compassion will live long in our hearts. A great man, he never lost his sense of humanity. Senator Adams was a true leader, he inspired us, as John Quincy Adams said,
‘to dream more, learn more, do more and become more.’ It is a sad day for Alaska. Our sympathy goes out to his family and to all he touched.”

NEWS: Petersen “Humbled” to Receive Award for his Work to Pass Autism Bill

Today Rep. Pete Petersen (D-Anchorage) was awarded a Soupy Award for his work to pass legislation to ensure that children with autism can receive the treatment they need. Soupy Awards are given annually by Stone Soup Group, an Alaska nonprofit that helps families of children with special needs, to recognize businesses, individuals, and organizations that have made a difference for children with special needs.
