NEWS: Legislation to be Pre-filed to Give Alaska Kids the Tools to Prevent Child Abuse

Anchorage – In advance of the start of the 29th Alaska Legislature in January, Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) will pre-file legislation to enact “Erin’s Law” in Alaska. The bill is identical to H.B. 233, which was taken up during the 2nd session of the 28th Alaska Legislature. H.B. 233 had over 20 cosponsors and was supported by the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development. There is widespread support from parents, teachers, and child abuse survivors to pass the law.

News: $20,000 Donated To Get Laptops To Help Alaska’s Growing Foster Youth Population

Anchorage-Today Rep. Les Gara (D-Anchorage) announced a major donation to the “Laptops for Foster Youth” effort. The goal is to get needed laptop computers to Alaska’s growing number of foster youth. A few years ago there were roughly 1,700 foster youth in Alaska. Today there are approximately 2,200 foster youth in the state.

NEWS: House Minority Praises the Signing of a Bill Designating 20 Alaska Native Languages as Official State Languages

Anchorage - The Native languages of Alaska’s indigenous people became official languages of the State of Alaska on Thursday during a bill signing ceremony held in conjunction with the 2014 Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) Convention in Anchorage. Passage of the bill was a priority of the members Alaska House Minority Caucus and Alaska Native people from across the state. The prime sponsor of the bill was District 34 State Representative Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins (D-Sitka). The Sitka Democrat spoke during Thursday’s signing ceremony.
