NEWS: Fairbanks State Representative Calls for Justice in the Fairbanks Four Case

JUNEAU – Over the last several weeks a Fairbanks courtroom has been the site of an evidentiary hearing focused on the Fairbanks Four case. Marvin Roberts, Eugene Vent, George Frese, and Kevin Pease were convicted of murder in 1999 in the 1997 death of John Hartman of Fairbanks. The four men have long claimed innocence and new evidence may call into doubt their guilt. Rep. David Guttenberg (D-Fairbanks) used a special order speech on the first day of the 3rd Special Session of the Alaska Legislature to call for justice in the case.

NEWS: Alaska Independent Democratic Coalition Ready for the Gasline Special Session

ANCHORAGE – The third Special Session of the 29th Alaska Legislature is scheduled to start Saturday morning with House and Senate floor sessions. Governor Bill Walker has scheduled a briefing for all lawmakers Saturday afternoon to outline the details of the three pieces of legislation that will be under consideration. The members of the Alaska Independent Democratic Coalition (AIDC) are looking forward to the Governor’s detailed briefing but are dismayed by today’s announcement from the Senate President and the Speaker of the House that members of the House Finance and Senate Resources Committee’s will be encouraged to skip the briefing in favor of committee hearings on the same subjects at the same exact time as the Governor’s briefing.

NEWS: Rep. Geran Tarr to Hold Legislative Update and Public Safety Meeting

ANCHORAGE – Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) will be holding a town hall style meeting on Saturday, October 17th at the Clark Middle School for residents of the Airport Heights, Mountain View, and Russian Jack neighborhoods. The meeting will cover a broad range of topics including presentations from the Municipality of Anchorage on setting up a neighborhood watch, participating in the Trail Watch program, emergency preparedness, and Green Dot training.

NEWS: Task Force Created to Help Implement Erin’s Law and Bree’s Law in Alaska Will Meet Tuesday

ANCHORAGE – The inaugural meeting of the task force created to help implement Erin’s Law and Bree’s Law in Alaska will be held Tuesday, October 13 at the Anchorage Legislative Information Office. The task force was created to provide recommendations to the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development. Bree’s Law mandates that teen dating violence education be taught in middle schools and high schools in Alaska. Erin’s Law requires school districts teach elementary and secondary school student’s personal body safety information. Erin’s Law, which was championed by Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage), also requires that school staff be trained on how to recognize the signs of child sexual abuse.
