NEWS: Task Force Created to Help Implement Erin’s Law and Bree’s Law in Alaska Will Meet Tuesday

Rep. Tarr and Erin Merryn ANCHORAGE – The inaugural meeting of the task force created to help implement Erin’s Law and Bree’s Law in Alaska will be held Tuesday, October 13 at the Anchorage Legislative Information Office. The task force was created to provide recommendations to the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development. Bree’s Law mandates that teen dating violence education be taught in middle schools and high schools in Alaska. Erin’s Law requires school districts teach elementary and secondary school student’s personal body safety information. Erin’s Law, which was championed by Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage), also requires that school staff be trained on how to recognize the signs of child sexual abuse.

Note from Rep. Gara: Special “I Just Broke Four Ribs” Edition

Rep. Gara Newsletter Well, this weekend it was my turn to take up hospital space. On the bright side, I now know we have at least one great ambulance crew in Anchorage. On the down side, I don’t get to take back that step on a wet stair, and the fall that followed. It apparently cracked four ribs apart, and that apparently takes about six weeks to heal, I hope. It should put me on pace for the Governor’s October 24 Special Session. Or at least close enough. For some reason, my doctors were pretty mum when I asked if I can take a day to go fishing before that.

Rep. Kawasaki's Juneau Note Last week, Governor Walker issued a proclamation calling the legislature into a special session to address gasline issues. On October 24, we will head down to Juneau to address some key issues: To reinstate a reserve tax on North Slope resources in the ground that are not developed and a proposal to buy TransCanada’s share of the gas pipeline and gas treatment facility. I am excited to work on these issues and hope that others can make the necessary steps to come together and move forward for Alaska.
