NEWS: Memorial Services Scheduled for Rep. Max Gruenberg

Juneau – Two memorial services have been scheduled for Representative Max Gruenberg, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 72. The first memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 21 at the Resurrection Lutheran Church in Juneau. The second memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 25 at Temple Beth Sholom in Anchorage. The public is invited to attend the memorial services to show their respect for Rep. Gruenberg.

Rep. Guttenberg’s Newsletter: Important update for Goldstream Valley

Beginning February 23rd, permafrost researchers will collect airborne electromagnetic data in the Goldstream Valley using a specialized 25 foot long geophysical instrument towed beneath a small civilian helicopter. The helicopter will carry the instrument roughly 100 feet above the ground while collecting data. The Fairbanks Federal Aviation Administration is working closely with the research team to ensure public safety. Aerial surveys will be completed by March 14th.

Everyone is talking about numbers this session. Alaska’s budget deficit is nearly $3.5 billion. The Republican-led majority threatens to cut an additional $1 billion from state government spending. Over $3 million is slated to be cut from early childhood education, which would decimate effective programs like Parents as Teachers, the Imagination Library, and pre-k in Alaska.

Rep. Claman’s Newsletter: House Focuses on Budget

The House voted this week to suspend non-budget related committee hearings. This move allows us to focus on budget topics. Budget subcommittee meetings have been extended and the House Finance Committee is meeting daily. Yesterday, the Finance Committee hosted a “Budget 101,” which is a helpful resource to understanding budget documents. I will keep you as informed as possible as we go through the next few weeks on opportunities for public testimony and other community events.
