The last day of session is supposed to be Sunday April 17. However, there’s been some speculation that we won’t be able to finish in time. That all depends on whether or not the House and the Senate can come to an agreement about the capital budget and some other key items. At the end of session, a few key things need to fall into place as the final pieces of the puzzle. This year, the end game is centering around the operating and capital budgets, oil and gas taxes, coastal zone management, performance scholarships and education funding.

The House passed an $8.9-billion operating budget last week. The Senate Finance Committee will hear the budget next and will be taking public testimony next week. It is important that you have your say! The Senate will hear from thousands of Alaskans on every budget item and use the information to amend the current budget as necessary.

My heart goes out to the victims of the horrific earthquake in Japan this morning. It reminded me of being in second grade and watching the ground literally move in waves during the 1964 earthquake that devastated Alaska. I will be watching for ways to help.
Last week, the Anchorage Daily News ran my compass piece on the gasline and why I believe we shouldn’t change course now. I wanted to be sure to share that with you in case you missed it.
