On Monday, the House Resources Committee passed out legislation to revise Alaska’s oil & gas taxes after only a handful of hearings. As I wrote in my February 11 newsletter, I oppose these changes. Governor’s Oil Tax Giveaway Moves Despite Many Unanswered Questions

JUNEAU – Last night, the House Resources Committee passed Governor Parnell’s bill to give away around $2 billion of Alaska’s oil wealth each year despite many unanswered questions by committee members. The committee’s expedited timeline for moving the bill left only one day to hear the details of the actual bill language and two days for proposing and discussing amendments.

Yesterday a constituent called to ask why my most recent newsletter did not mention the oil and gas tax debate, the single most important issue before the legislature. I told him that I actually think about little else and I know that if we don’t get this one right, we might as well forget about the rest of state government because the Alaska we know and love will just dry up and go away.
