House Democrats welcome the signs of progress and new exploration
Today, Alaska House Democrats released a letter from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that indicates the agency may be prepared to approve ConocoPhillips Alaska’s plans to expand the Alpine unit into the National Petroleum Reserve – Alaska (NPR-A).
“We know there is more work to be done, but we take this as a very positive indication that this important development for Alaska could be moving forward soon,” said Rep. Bob Miller (D-Fairbanks).

One of the big secrets during all the ongoing oil and gas tax debate is that oil field employment is at near record levels. Sadly, the Alaska Department of Labor statistics show that half the workforce is now from other states. This is unacceptable to those of us who want to support Alaskan hire.
I am pleased that the Senate Labor & Commerce Committee is holding public hearings in Fairbanks and Anchorage, trying to understand why hiring from out of state is increasing, and how the state can encourage the hiring of Alaskans.

New Oil Drilling Rigs, High Profits and New Developers Undermine Parnell Demand for Oil Tax Giveaway

This week pictures surfaced of two new $100 million drilling rigs being sent from the Portland shipyard to Alaska’s North Slope. The owner of the rigs, Parker Drilling, has indicated that this delivery is part of British Petroleum’s land-based drilling program. The rigs made news in Portland when they required a shutdown of interstate traffic during rush hour as they were transported down the Willamette River.
“A picture is worth a thousand words,” said Senator Hollis French, D-Anchorage, who took the photos during a recent tour of the port of Portland. “The governor is acting like the sky is falling, but these two rigs tell a very different story.”
