I am deeply saddened to report that on Sunday morning my friend, Representative Max Gruenberg, House minority Whip and the longest serving legislator in the Alaska House of Representatives, passed away unexpectedly. With Max’s passing, we lost a family member and a mentor who legislators sought out for support and advice regardless of what party they belonged to. He was the guardian of a dying flame, keeping the spirit of a younger Alaska alive by always putting the needs of the Alaskan people before political gamesmanship.

Rep. Guttenberg’s Newsletter: Important update for Goldstream Valley
February 16, 2016
Beginning February 23rd, permafrost researchers will collect airborne electromagnetic data in the Goldstream Valley using a specialized 25 foot long geophysical instrument towed beneath a small civilian helicopter. The helicopter will carry the instrument roughly 100 feet above the ground while collecting data. The Fairbanks Federal Aviation Administration is working closely with the research team to ensure public safety. Aerial surveys will be completed by March 14th.

I am writing this between tears today. Yesterday Alaska lost a statesman. Many of us lost a good friend. I’ve served with Max Gruenberg my whole career in the legislature. I got to know a man who – despite how some in the press who didn’t know Max might describe him (they saw that he fixed a lot of bills with amendments) – was a passionate, funny husband and father who cared deeply about others. He cared deeply about giving people born with little a chance in this world a fair shake. He cared deeply about fairness.

More important than this was some tragic news of just yesterday: amidst the whirlwind of activity this session, a dear friend and member of my caucus, Representative Max Gruenberg passed away this weekend and will be sincerely missed by all.
