Today marked the first day of school for our Fairbanks youth! The end of summer vacation comes too soon for most of us Alaskans. It’s a bittersweet time for the kids and parents alike who spent the last couple months enjoying quality family time outdoors. On the other hand, the start of the school year is an exciting time: children get to see old friends and start new classes, and parents themselves get a small break. During this week, please remember that traffic is increasing as people go back to school and work and different driving patterns are emerging.

First, Covenant House opened a new facility in Anchorage - which the Legislature, private entities and foundations and others helped fund. And you might want to volunteer there after reading this - their number is 272-1255. I did last week on a pizza and movie outing, and plan to again.

Last month the 4th annual Food Film Festival was held and hundreds attended showings of GMO: OMG. I was proud to play a part in this year’s festival and share information about the GMO labeling legislation. The support for this legislation is fantastic! Thank you to ACE, the Alaska Food Policy Council, and Bear Tooth for hosting this important event.
