Last weekend, I attended the “Alaska’s Fiscal and Economic Future” forum about Alaska’s fiscal challenges and different options for moving forward with a long-term fiscal plan for Alaska. As public officials consider a long-term fiscal plan for Alaska, it is important to hear from diverse groups of Alaskans and consider all of our options. In the midst of back to school activities and winding down summer activities, I hope everyone is enjoying the wonderful fall weather!

Rep. Guttenberg’s Newsletter: Arctic Executive Steering Committee Visits Fairbanks, Hospice Fundraiser

Last week I had the opportunity to volunteer for the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital at their annual hospice benefit concert at the UAF Davis Concert Hall. Each year the Far North Fiddle Fest takes place to bring awareness to this important program. It was great seeing people from the community come out to help support interior hospice, as well as enjoy some of the country’s best fiddlers.

The leaves are almost gone and fall is starting to wind down here in Fairbanks. September brought the official beginning of Medicaid expansion, making health care available to up to 40,000 Alaskans. It’s always good to be an Alaskan, but it feels even better now that we’ve gone through with this expansion. I wanted to send you an update on what’s happening and bring attention to some upcoming events in our community.

Note from Rep. Gara: Finally! A Coastal Trail Bridge, Equal Rights Ordinance Testimony & Happy News On Parks

You’ve asked. We have the answer. This first news item goes in the “I can’t believe it’s actually going to happen” category. We’ve been told the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail bridge that collapsed last summer when a VERY heavy maintenance truck drove over it is finally going to be ready to walk, bike, ski, or run over. New Mayor Ethan Berkowitz has pressed for quick action on this, and it is scheduled to be completed by October 19, and possibly as soon as October 14.
