To rush out the door, to get the kids to school, to work hard every day, and to live within your budget only to come home, turn on the evening news and hear the Governor talk of capping your Permanent Fund Dividend, imposing an income or a sales tax, and making dangerous cuts to eliminate Pre-K and early education.

This year will be a busy one for the Alaska Legislature as we tackle a huge budget shortfall, falling oil production and uncertainty. Alaska has had tough times before and we have survived and thrived. We have done so, because we were able to work together, shed our partisan blinders and become a better government. Our state Constitution was ratified by all 55 diverse members of the convention in a time when the sole focus was on how to make the state a better place to live, work and raise a family. Over the next few months, I’m hopeful that working together will make us a stronger Alaska.

We’re set up in Juneau and ready to go! All eyes are on the legislature this session as we address the need for a fiscal plan. The good news is we did plan for this day with savings and we have assets. No one predicted oil would drop to recent record lows of $26 so there is a reasonable sense of urgency. I believe that if the Legislature works together we can come up with proposals that work for Alaska. I want to reassure you that I will be working overtime with my colleagues to come up with a solution that is fair to all Alaskans.
