Note from Rep. Gara: 2nd Annual Holiday Laptops for Foster Youth Drive - Improving One Life At A Time
December 15, 2011
This week we are launching our second annual “Laptops for Foster Youth Drive”. Since last year we have matched over 60 youth with good, late model used and new laptops. Youth have used these laptops for school, to transport pictures of their families and friends, and to lead a life that more closely resembles those of their peers outside of foster care.
If you have a quality used, or new laptop you’d like to donate, please let us know, and we’ll help you make someone’s life better! The criteria for the laptops we are looking for is at the end of the e-mail. If you want to donate funds to purchase one or more laptops, we can help arrange that too.

December 15, 2011
(ANCHORAGE) – Today Rep. Les Gara is launching the second annual Laptops for Foster youth Holiday Drive. Over the past year this drive has resulted in over 60 matches for youth who use laptops for school, to transport pictures of their families and friends, and to lead a life that more closely resembles those of their peers outside of foster care.
“We hope the holiday spirit will cause generous Alaskans to keep this success going into a second year,” said Rep. Gara, whose office started this effort with foster youth advocate Amanda Metivier last December.

Many of these organizations are critically low on supplies and your help is needed to make sure that those who are less fortunate are able to have a happy Thanksgiving. Please take a moment to learn about some of the needs that have come to my attention, and about ways you can provide assistance.

Berta’s Briefings from Rep. Gardner: The City Has a List. Maybe You do to?
November 21, 2011
Last Friday afternoon Anchorage legislators were invited to meet with the Mayor as he rolled out Anchorage’s 2012 Legislative Program. The city’s requests touch on planning, maintenance and public safety.
The only surprise for Midtown Anchorage was an intriguing proposal to move the Transit Center from downtown to midtown Anchorage. The mayor is asking for funds to begin an investigation for a new site, design and planning. Given that riders from all over the city often have to go downtown the change buses, this idea might turn out to have much merit.

Rep. Kawasaki’s Juneau Note: Special Veterans Day Edition
November 10, 2011
Initially established as “Armistice Day” in 1919 by President Wilson, November 11, was a time to commemorate the signing of an armistice between Germany and the Allied nations, which ended WWI a year prior.
Today, we recognize this day as Veteran’s Day, in honor of the brave men and women who have served our country. It’s a time to thank these soldiers for an often thankless job, and to reflect on the sacrifice of our fellow Americans to defend the freedoms and rights of our country.
