NEWS: Concerns Raised About Monopoly of Individual Health Insurance in Alaska

Juneau – Today, the Alaska Division of Insurance cancelled Moda Health’s ability to sell health insurance in Alaska. That leaves Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield as the only company selling individual health insurance plans in Alaska. Representative Adam Wool (D- Fairbanks) responded to the news by highlighting the need to reform Alaska’s health insurance rate review process. Rep. Wool is the sponsor of House Bill 239 which would create a series of reforms to strengthen the Division of Insurance’s review process and make sure consumers are informed of proposed rate increases.

NEWS: Representative Tarr Introduces Legislation to Protect Wild Alaska Salmon

JUNEAU – Today, Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) introduced legislation aimed at protecting wild Alaska salmon and thriving, sustainable fisheries. House Bill 258 will prohibit the sale of genetically modified fish, dubbed “Frankenfish,” in the state of Alaska. House Joint Resolution 28 denounces the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s recent approval of AquaBounty’s AquAdvantage genetically engineered salmon. This is the first time a genetically modified animal has been approved by the FDA for human consumption.

NEWS: Rep. Josephson Applauds Approval of Federal Ban on Plastic Microbeads That Endanger Fish and Wildlife

ANCHORAGE — On Monday, December 28, 2015, President Obama signed into law the “Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015.” The legislation phases out the use of small plastic microbeads that are often used in cosmetics and personal hygiene products. Manufacturing of products using microbeads will be phased out by July 1, 2017. The sale of products containing microbeads will be phased out by July 1, 2018.

NEWS: “Right to Try” Legislation Proposed to Help the Terminally Ill in Alaska

FAIRBANKS – Representative Scott Kawasaki (D-Fairbanks) and Representative Harriet Drummond (D-Anchorage) will introduce a “right to try” bill in the upcoming 2nd Session of the 29th Alaska Legislature. The bill will be the House companion to SB 113, which was introduced by Senator Bill Wielechowski (D-Anchorage) in April.
