The Gardens are Opening!
Winter is waning, spring is creeping in, and the Gardens at Bragaw are opening! The Anchorage Community Land Trust announced the opening of a new community garden this year. The garden is on Bragaw between 4th Ave and the Glenn Highway. Registration for Garden plots will take place on March 30th and April 6th at the Mountain View Library from 11 AM to 1 PM. I can’t wait to see you all in the garden this summer! If you have any questions, call the Anchorage Community Land Trust at 748-5848.

NEWS: Rep. David Guttenberg to be sworn in at later date
January 14, 2013
JUNEAU - Representative David Guttenberg (D- District 38) will be excused from the 28th Alaska State Legislature’s swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday, January 15th. He will remain in Fairbanks to continue to help with his wife Marilyn’s medical care and will be sworn in at the earliest opportunity by Speaker Mike Chenault.

Dear Constituents and Neighbors:
A celebration was held and an award was given this past June to highlight a District 22 project and its final passage in the State Capital Budget. The award for the Alexander Street drainage Project completion included a presentation as an example of how communities and neighbors can make a difference. This project is located in the eastern side of the Airport Heights Community Council. The project process started formally about three years ago. If you watch the video, linked to this page, you can see that the ‘start’ was when enough neighbors started talking about what was happening in their basements (each had not mentioned the problem to fellow condo association members, thinking that they were the only one with disgusting corrosive pools in their crawl-spaces.)

Note from Rep. Gara: Guv Signs Our Bill to Protect Alaskans’ Fishing Stream Access!

Well good news doesn’t usually come in the hospital. But that’s where I am, and where I got the good news that the Governor signed my bill seeking to maintain and enhance the cherished right of Alaskans to access our fishing streams, so public access remains for this and the next generation.
Predictions are that surgery went well, but it will be a little bit before we know for sure. What we do know is all the cancer is gone - thanks for all the well wishes. That’s the good news. It will take a little time to find out if there are any side effects.

STUDENT CONCUSSION BILL SIGNED INTO LAW

Doogan bill will protect athletes from serious brain injuries
JUNEAU – Today the governor signed a bill sponsored by Representative Mike Doogan (D-Anchorage) to protect student athletes from serious brain injuries resulting from multiple concussions.
The bill (HB 15) requires that a student with a suspected concussion be removed from play or practice and not return until cleared by a qualified medical professional. It will prevent potential serious brain injuries that can be caused by multiple concussions.
