Rep. Guttenberg’s Newsletter: Costly Legislative Lawsuit on the Horizon

On Tuesday leg council announced plans to sue Gov. Walker in an effort to block his authority to expand Medicaid in Alaska. This comes as no surprise considering the opposition the Governor faced since he first introduced Medicaid expansion into the budget during the regular 90 day session. It was blocked by a few and has landed us where we are today—about to spend half a million dollars during a deficit budget on corporate lawyers to carry out a lawsuit against an expansion that would bring in federal money to the state and create thousands of jobs.

It’s been a pretty bizarre week in the Legislature. The Legislative Council voted 10-1 to sue the state to attempt to prevent Medicaid expansion from providing 40,000 Alaskans access to healthcare while saving the state millions of dollars a year. I won’t go into all of the details about why expansion is good for Alaska and good for Fairbanks, but you can read the article I wrote for the Fairbanks Daily News Miner last month.

NEWS: Erin’s Law Documentary to be Shown Nationwide August 30 on TLC

ANCHORAGE – The cable television channel TLC, in partnership with two leading child abuse prevention organizations, will air a new documentary later this month exploring the challenges faced by the victims of child sexual abuse. Rep. Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) has been working on solutions to the epidemic rate of child sexual abuse in Alaska and is encouraging Alaskans to watch “Breaking the Silence” Sunday, August 30 at 6 pm Alaska time.
