The state’s $3.5-billion budget deficit has headlined most newspapers this session and overshadowed almost every other issue. My office has received hundreds of calls, emails, letters and messages on a variety of topics ranging from dramatic cuts to schools to the silencing of public radio and the elimination some benefits to seniors. I will personally read and listen to each and every communication and work to protect the critical and constitutionally-mandated functions of government.

This year I expect there to be significant stand offs between the House, Senate and governor over education funding, Medicaid expansion and the future of the gas line.

Today the Republican associated firm Dittman Research released a poll that makes one thing very clear: Alaskans demand Medicaid expansion. The poll very plainly reveals that 60% of Alaskan residents are eager for the legislature to do the right thing and provide Alaska’s working poor with medical coverage.

Rep. Josephson’s Newsletter: Operating Budget & Medicaid Expansion

We have less than 30 days of session and there is still so much to do. Two weeks ago the House took the first step to passing a budget by passing the operating budget over to the Senate. The process is far from over, though, and will continue on until the last weeks of session. Every legislator will be watching closely and I will be sure to keep you all informed as changes occur.
