I want to wish everyone happy holidays! May the celebration of Christmas and Hanukkah and the coming New Year bring you and your loved ones joy and good health. Today also marks winter solstice—the year’s single shortest day measured by length of daylight. And while Alaskans tired of the darkness can take heart today, I recently learned that we actually get more daylight in the summer here in Alaska than we have darkness in the winter. So here’s to celebrating the coming of light in Alaska.

OPINION: Stop Wasteful Spending During a Fiscal Crisis

One of the biggest surprises has been the disconnect between our fiscal situation and some of our spending decisions. Thank you for taking the time to complete and submit the fiscal survey we mailed earlier this session. Of those who completed the survey, 89% are concerned about the budget shortfall. An overwhelming 71% of the survey respondents said we should make efficiency cuts to the budget and figure out new ways to generate revenues. We are listening and have advocated this position during the session. Our neighbors also said we should cut funding for mega-projects. We have repeatedly offered and voted in favor of budget amendments to cut funding for these unaffordable projects.

Every day I talk to legislators in both parties to see if we can build a bi-partisan fiscal plan. I’m trying to keep things calm. I’m trying not to say “no,” even to proposals that cause me concern. A fair compromise will have to include elements most members don’t love. Compromise involves principled give and take. I’m listening to everyone’s ideas, and hoping enough members of the Republican majority will also be willing to put together a balanced, fair, bi-partisan fiscal plan.
