NEWS: City and Rep. Kawasaki to Hold Downtown Traffic Meeting

Fairbanks, AK – In conjunction with the City of Fairbanks, Representative Scott Kawasaki have coordinated a public meeting to discuss the possibility of installing speed humps on residential streets in the downtown area known as “Slaterville.” The meeting will take place Thursday, November 1st at 4:30pm and will be held in the City Council Chambers at 800 Cushman Street. The public is welcome to attend. Information will be provided on the impacts of adding speed humps to neighborhoods and there will be time for open discussion with the legislators and City of Fairbanks leadership.

Success: Compromise Reached on Healy Coal Restart
I applaud the decision reached between the Environmental Protection Agency, Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority, and Golden Valley Electrical Association to move forward with the restart of the dormant coal plant in Healy. For years I have supported the restart of the plant, under the stipulation that it could be accomplished in an environmentally responsible, efficient manner that kept the best interests of the ratepayers under consideration. I believe the terms of this exciting announcement does exactly that, and can finally offer Fairbanks some tangible relief from burdensome energy bills without ignoring the need to address our air quality challenges.

School is back in full swing, with students from Pre-K to UA resuming their school year routines. This time of year always inspires and reminds me of the important role quality education plays in Alaska. And of course, please be aware of the increase in vehicle and foot traffic around schools and bus stops. Let’s keep our students safe this school year.
Please remember to slow down and beware for flashing yellow lights to keep our kids safe this school year. School zones are marked at 20 miles an hour for safety.

Program Gives Local Citizens Voices in Development Decisions
Alaska Representative David Guttenberg (D-Fairbanks) today endorsed Ballot Measure No. 2, which would re-establish Alaska’s coastal management program. Guttenberg emphasized his support of coastal management in a letter to constituents. He urged Alaskans to join him in voting for Ballot Measure No. 2 in the August 28, 2012 Primary Election.
