Friday October the 18th is Alaska Day! It commemorates the day Alaska was transferred from Russia to the United States. On October 18th, 1867, the Russian flag was lowered for the last time and an American flag was raised for the first of many times. We are blessed to live in this great state (and pick up such a bargain!) Celebrate by doing something Alaskan with friends and family. Go for a hike at Creamer’s Field and notice the leaves changing color, take the kids to Pioneer Park, or learn more about Alaskan history at the UAF Museum!

NEWS: Tarr and Ellis Applaud Air Force F-16 Decision

Today, Representative Geran Tarr and Senator Johnny Ellis welcomed the United States Air Force’s decision to take the “no action” alternative from the 18th Aggressor Squadrons draft environmental impact statement.
The move, which would have relocated the 18th Aggressor Squadron, supporting units, and personnel who provide maintenance on the F-16s, from Eielson Air Force Base (EAFB) to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) Alaska, would have had negatively impacted the residents of Mountain View and Fairbanks and was not supported by either community.

Today marked the first day of school for our Fairbanks youth! The end of summer vacation comes too soon for most of us Alaskans. It’s a bittersweet time for the kids and parents alike who spent the last couple months enjoying quality family time outdoors. On the other hand, the start of the school year is an exciting time: children get to see old friends and start new classes, and parents themselves get a small break. During this week, please remember that traffic is increasing as people go back to school and work and different driving patterns are emerging.
