JUNEAU - Representative Scott Kawasaki (D-Fairbanks) pre-filed legislation (HB 38) to help lower in-state energy costs by giving priority to the sale of Alaska royalty oil and gas to be used for in-state energy production.

Today, Representative Les Gara and Senator Hollis French applauded the Army Corps of Engineers for granting the necessary permits for ExxonMobil to begin the long-awaited development of the Pt. Thomson Unit on Alaska’s North Slope. Earlier this month, Rep. Gara and Sen. French wrote a letter to the Army Corps encouraging its prompt action on this permit.

Success: Compromise Reached on Healy Coal Restart
I applaud the decision reached between the Environmental Protection Agency, Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority, and Golden Valley Electrical Association to move forward with the restart of the dormant coal plant in Healy. For years I have supported the restart of the plant, under the stipulation that it could be accomplished in an environmentally responsible, efficient manner that kept the best interests of the ratepayers under consideration. I believe the terms of this exciting announcement does exactly that, and can finally offer Fairbanks some tangible relief from burdensome energy bills without ignoring the need to address our air quality challenges.

Rep. Petersen’s Report from the Capitol: Muldoon Fire Station Open; Turning Waste Into Energy

Muldoon Fire Station 6 is open and operational! The dedication will be October 27th, from 1-4pm at 1301 Patterson St and I hope you’ll join me there.
The new station is located near Begich Middle School on Debarr to serve the Muldoon area. The new location will improve response times, which is important because every minute counts during an emergency. Senator Wielechowski and I worked hard to secure funding for the new fire station and we couldn’t have done it without strong support from the community. Thank you for making our neighborhoods safer!
