While the legislature is out of session, bills cannot be passed by the House or Senate to become law; however, committees do meet for informational hearings on specific issues or pieces of legislation.
I have spent the past couple of weeks (with the exception of several wonderful hikes around town in the gorgeous weather!) attending committee hearings and conferences to become a better informed representative. Welcome to the first edition of Health and Environment, a new monthly newsletter from my legislative office. Many of us or members of our families have experienced health issues, from cancer, reproductive health issues, behavioral issues like autism or ADHD, or conditions like Alzheimer’s, that may be linked to environmental causes. New research reports regularly help us understand these conditions in new ways, often with a need for a policy change to address the issue and improve health outcomes. This newsletter will be a way to share information and bring you into the conversation about policy changes that may be necessary in Alaska.

Golden Days in the Golden Heart City
More than a 100 years ago, the trader ET Barnette steamed forward through the Chena Slough. Originally headed to create an outpost between Valdez and Eagle, he was forced to unload supplies on the banks of the slough near where the Barnette Street Bridge stands today. One year later, an Italian immigrant named Felice Pedroni discovered gold near Fox and the town quickly grew around the city center. By 1905, several thousand indigenous people, adventure-seekers from all over the US, and international immigrants called themselves Fairbanksans.
