ANCHORAGE – On Thursday, Alaska Governor Bill Walker issued a proclamation calling the Alaska Legislature into a special session next month. The governor is asking the Legislature to consider legislation to move a project forward to get the natural gas on the North Slope to market.

Last weekend, I attended the “Alaska’s Fiscal and Economic Future” forum about Alaska’s fiscal challenges and different options for moving forward with a long-term fiscal plan for Alaska. As public officials consider a long-term fiscal plan for Alaska, it is important to hear from diverse groups of Alaskans and consider all of our options. I’m proud that I’ve been frugal with your money. I’ve run the lowest cost office in the Legislature for many years, and in other years I’ve barely missed being the lowest cost office to an even cheaper legislator. Though in fairness, office costs include travel to Juneau for the Legislative Session, and Legislators from parts of rural Alaska have to ship their personal belongings to Juneau every year. They can’t avoid having much higher travel costs than someone who lives in Anchorage.

Last week I had the opportunity to volunteer for the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital at their annual hospice benefit concert at the UAF Davis Concert Hall. Each year the Far North Fiddle Fest takes place to bring awareness to this important program. It was great seeing people from the community come out to help support interior hospice, as well as enjoy some of the country’s best fiddlers.
