I hope you wore blue yesterday. In the Capitol, and across the state, wearing blue meant that you support raising awareness and preventing child abuse in your community. We hosted a rally on the Capitol steps with Department of Health and Social Services Commissioner Val Davidson as our speaker. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and we are taking steps to raise awareness and enact policies that will prevent child abuse. Last year our focus was Erin’s Law and Bree’s Law, that passed last June, and is now being implemented.

NEWS: Rep. Tarr to Celebrate Signing of Legislation to Implement Erin’s Law in Alaska

ANCHORAGE – Later today, Alaska Governor Bill Walker will sign the Alaska Safe Children’s Act during a ceremony as part of the 2015 Alaska Flag Day Celebration in Anchorage. HB 44 includes Erin’s Law, which requires school districts across the state to teach children how to recognize and report sexual abuse. Erin’s Law was championed in Alaska by Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) who helped guide the law through multiple legislative sessions all the way to final passage on July 11, 2015.

NEWS: Progress Made to Pass Erin’s Law to Protect the Most Vulnerable of Alaskans

JUNEAU - Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) offers thanks to the members of the House Education Committee for waiving House Bill 44 out of committee Friday, setting the stage for quick movement in the final days of the legislative session. HB 44 is scheduled for a floor vote in the House today pending approval by the House Finance Committee.

NEWS: Alaska House Unanimously Adopts a Measure Proclaiming April as Child Abuse Prevention Month

JUNEAU— Today, the Alaska House of Representatives unanimously passed House Concurrent Resolution 7 proclaiming April as Child Abuse Prevention Month. Child abuse is at epidemic levels in Alaska, which currently ranks among the top 5 states for the rate of child abuse. HCR 7 is sponsored by Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage).
