NEWS: House and Senate Minorities Propose Creating a Caucus of the Whole in the Alaska Legislature

Juneau – Last Friday was the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Alaska Constitution. The convention in Fairbanks featured 55 Alaskans, elected from all regions and walks of life. These far-thinking delegates came together as one and crafted a document that has guided not only the state government, but also Alaska’s institutions and people. The constitutional example is being followed today by the Alaska Senate Democrats and the Alaska Independent Democratic Coalition as they propose a new structure for the 29th Alaska Legislature.

Alaska is a resource rich state, yet the cost of energy is very high in Fairbanks and many rural communities. Of course, keeping consumer costs down and affordable in Anchorage will always be a top priority. Tuesday, January 20th marked the first day of the 29th Alaska Legislature and it is looking to be a very interesting first session. Our caucus has grown by 30%; we have a new governor with ambitions to expand Medicaid, providing insurance to 40,000 Alaskans. And, oil prices have dropped to $49.50 greatly reducing Alaska’s revenue stream and helping to create a $3.5 billion deficit. But before I start talking about the rough days that we will have to weather, I would like to start with some good news!
