We are now 44 days into the 90 day legislative session, and you now have the opportunity to exercise your right to be heard on the budget. The Legislature is in the process of making tough decisions about government programs and services, the level at which we will fund programs and changes, and how to continue a strong state economy. Hearing from you about your thoughts and suggestions about the budget is always helpful as we continue to discuss and make decisions about the budget.

We Need to Hear from You! The budget will be heard in the Finance meetings all week before it is voted on by the House in the near future. As you may have heard, we have an enormous $3.5 billion deficit due to lower oil production and prices under the “Oil Wealth Giveaway”. This week the House Finance committee will be holding public testimony on the State Operating Budget. Anchorage has its own time slot and day scheduled so if you have any concerns this will be your chance to be heard. Are you’re concerned about the projected cuts to public education ($23.3 million); cuts to the University budget (about $35 million); the exclusion of Medicaid Expansion; the closure of the Wildland Fire Academy in McGrath; or any other department cuts (or non-cuts)? We want to hear from you!

Saturday is the annual “Anchorage Caucus.” A terrible name (who besides politicians uses the word “caucus?!” Anyway, it’s a listening session by Anchorage area legislators from 1 ’til 3 (and until 5 if there’s more public testimony) at the Anchorage Assembly Chambers at the Loussac Library.
