We have less than 30 days of session and there is still so much to do. Two weeks ago the House took the first step to passing a budget by passing the operating budget over to the Senate. The process is far from over, though, and will continue on until the last weeks of session. Every legislator will be watching closely and I will be sure to keep you all informed as changes occur.

Rep. Claman’s Newsletter: Operating Budget Continues

The House voted on the Operating Budget just after midnight on Thursday night and it is now on its way to the Senate for further consideration. I have some concerns with this version of the budget in light of the substantial cuts already proposed by the Walker-Mallott Administration. Approving the budget is a continuing process that we will follow closely in the weeks ahead. As always, I value feedback from West Anchorage residents and neighbors in order to better represent you. In the wee hours this morning, after nine hours of debate and amendments, the House passed the FY 2016 Operating Budget on a vote of 25 to 14. The House version of the budget totals $ 4.1 billion - we are still facing about $ 3 billion in deficit.

NEWS: The Alaska Independent Democratic Coalition Unites in Opposition to Operating Budget that Harms Kids, Seniors and the Neediest of Alaskans

Juneau – The Alaska House of Representatives passed the Fiscal Year 2016 Budget Thursday night without the support of the Alaska Independent Democratic Coalition. All 13 members voted no because the budget harms seniors and children while protecting corporate interests and unaffordable projects. The Republican budget includes the total elimination of pre-k programs and a significant $32 million cut in funding for K-12 public education. Overall, the budget deficit still remains $3.5 billion. The Alaska Independent Democratic Coalition proposed millions of dollars in spending cuts while supporting efforts to protect education, seniors and kids.
