Rep. Kerttula’s Juneau Newsletter: We’re Almost There

On Tuesday, Representative Carl Gatto of Palmer passed away following a long and brave battle with cancer. On Wednesday, we held a small ceremony on the House Floor, singing Amazing Grace and placing thirty-nine roses on the desk he leaves vacant. The Legislature must still continue the people’s work. And we have a lot of work left to do before the end of regular session on Sunday night (we’re not sure whether there will be a special session or not). In this newsletter, I’ll talk about the issues that are still on the table for the end of session. I’ll also spotlight a great bill to provide insurance coverage for Autism spectrum disorders. Rep. Petersen’s Report from the Capitol: Garbage to Energy and Education Bills Considered in Committees; Getting Children with Autism the Treatment they Need;

We have eight days left in the legislative session, and I am hard at work to make sure your voice is heard in Juneau. Using Garbage to Make Electricity This week the House Energy Committee heard my resolution, HCR 10, to encourage the development of waste-to-energy technology in Alaska. Across the world, and in 24 states, this technology is used to burn garbage to make electricity. The remarkable thing about this technology is that modern waste-to-energy facilities actually produce fewer emissions than would be created from the garbage decomposing in a landfill.

[BILL] HB 79: INSURANCE COVERAGE FOR AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS

Autism is a devastating disorder affecting at least 1 in 100 children, accounting for 1% of America’s youth and 1 in 58 boys, according to the most recent study by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Despite being treatable, many children diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) never receive the treatment they need.
