Since the 28th Legislature convened on January 15, 2013, the Alaska State House has spent more
time chastising the federal government than working on any other issue (I agree that the federal government needs to be “checked” once in a while!). I am bothered that the legislature is spending huge amounts of time on issues that were already dealt with in previous bills and resolutions. If someone told me that this would happen, I would not have believed them.

A billion dollars here. A billion dollars there. Whatever.
Is that a way to craft an oil bill for this state’s future? This week one of the architects of the Senate’s oil tax bill similar to the Governor’s version followed oil company testimony stating they wouldn’t guarantee new production if the bill passed – and you just can’t make this stuff up – by saying “It’s kind of a crapshoot”. Rep. Drummond’s Newsletter: Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world

Thursday was a tough day on the House floor. The House majority, through sheer force of numbers, rapidly pushed through an operating budget with deep cuts to education and mental health services.
We need to arm people with knowledge. I introduced an amendment to restore $2.4 million in Pre-K grants. This wasn’t additional money to go into an already bloated budget, this was simply restoring what the Governor had already set aside for our children’s education.

The Gardens are Opening!
Winter is waning, spring is creeping in, and the Gardens at Bragaw are opening! The Anchorage Community Land Trust announced the opening of a new community garden this year. The garden is on Bragaw between 4th Ave and the Glenn Highway. Registration for Garden plots will take place on March 30th and April 6th at the Mountain View Library from 11 AM to 1 PM. I can’t wait to see you all in the garden this summer! If you have any questions, call the Anchorage Community Land Trust at 748-5848.
