Rep. Tarr’s Newsletter: End of 4th Special Session Update

As you know, the legislature adjourned the fourth special session last Sunday evening in Juneau. I’m back in Anchorage, getting settled back in, and meeting with constituents for the time being. The bad news is we adjourned without any revenue measures addressing the $3.8 billion deficit, so the Governor has already scheduled the fifth special session to begin on July 11th until August 16th. It’s looking like the special session will be in Juneau, but if that changes I’ll let you know.

Rep. Josephson’s Newsletter: The End of Special Session

They say when one door closes, another door opens. Apparently the same holds true for special sessions in Alaska because as soon as the Legislature adjourned the Governor called us back to Juneau for the 5th special session of the 29th Legislature. You can read Governor Walker’s proclamation here. (Note that, one new addition to the “call”—the bills before us—is a sales tax. I’m not sure this is an especially good sign, but am willing to review the idea).

Saturday evening, the legislature adjourned the first special session without approving any revenue measures to help close Alaska’s $4 billion deficit. On Sunday, Governor Walker called the legislature back to address Alaska’s financial challenges at a second special session to start on July 11th.
