I hope you wore blue yesterday. In the Capitol, and across the state, wearing blue meant that you support raising awareness and preventing child abuse in your community. We hosted a rally on the Capitol steps with Department of Health and Social Services Commissioner Val Davidson as our speaker. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and we are taking steps to raise awareness and enact policies that will prevent child abuse. Last year our focus was Erin’s Law and Bree’s Law, that passed last June, and is now being implemented.

As the legislative session continues, I am committed to keeping you updated on efforts to address Alaska’s fiscal challenges. The House Finance Committee is considering House Bill 249, which will raise motor fuel tax rates on vehicles, vessels, and aircraft. HB 249 is one of nine different revenue proposals recommended by the Walker-Mallott administration as part of its “complete solution to our fiscal situation.”

NEWS: Alaska Legislature Honors Previous Commitments by Offering to Purchase the Anchorage Legislative Information Office

Juneau – The Alaska Legislative Council voted tonight to make an offer to purchase the Anchorage Legislative Information Office (LIO) for $32.5 million, which is a significant reduction from the previous price placed on the recently remodeled and expanded building. The vote was 13-1 with Representative Sam Kito (D-Juneau) voting yes. He is the only member of the Alaska Independent Democratic Coalition on the Legislative Council.
