Alaska House Designates November Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month

JUNEAU – Today, the Alaska House of Representatives unanimously passed a resolution naming November 2011 Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month. Rep. Pete Petersen introduced the legislation to raise awareness of the deadly disease after a constituent told him of her father’s difficult battle with pancreatic cancer and the relative lack of research and attention the disease gets.

Rep. Petersen’s Report from the Capitol: Working for Lower Gasoline Prices; Turning Garbage into Energy; Anchorage Caucus Meetings; and House Finance Taking Testimony on Oil Tax Bill

Gasoline prices are back in the national news, but in Alaska high gas prices have been an issue that hasn’t gone away. Since 2008 Alaskan gas prices have consistently been the highest in the nation, excluding state taxes, even though we produce more oil per capita than any other state. It didn’t use to be this way, as early as March 2007 Anchorage actually had the lowest gas prices of any city in the country.

The Petersen Report: News from the Capitol - Anchorage Caucus Meetings Coming Up; Energy Committee Hears Important Energy Bill; Bills on the Move

I will be home in Anchorage the next two weekends for meetings of the Anchorage Caucus, of which I am a co-chair. In addition to the public hearing scheduled for Saturday March 26th from 10am to 1pm at the Assembly Chambers in the Loussac Library, we have added a second meeting on Saturday March 19 from 10 am to noon in the same location. The Anchorage Caucus consists of all of the legislators representing the Anchorage area so these will be great opportunities to share your ideas and concerns with the Anchorage delegation.

Petersen and Gara Announce “Truth in Alaska Oil Company Profits Act”

JUNEAU - Today Representatives Les Gara and Pete Petersen (both D- Anchorage) announced the “Truth in Alaska Oil Company Profits Act” to require Exxon to start revealing the profits they make in the State of Alaska. Exxon is the only major oil company that withholds that information.

Alaska Democrats Push Federal Bureaucrats to Allow NPR-A Oil Development

JUNEAU – Today, fourteen Democratic members of the Alaska Legislature called on the Obama Administration to resolve permit issues that are delaying ConocoPhillips’ efforts to develop a new oil field in the National Petroleum Reserve – Alaska (NPR-A). Last year, the Army Corps of Engineers rejected Conoco’s permit application to build a bridge across the Coleville River that the company needs to access the new field just west of its Alpine oil field, the third largest in Alaska.

[BILL] HCR 1: PANCREATIC CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Over 43,000 people were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the United States (US) in 2010. Almost 37,000 will die from the disease. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the US and ranks as one of the deadliest cancers with no real improvement in survival rates in the last 40 years.

[BILL] HB 92: LAO VETERAN REGISTRATION PLATES

House Bill 92 would recognize and honor Lao veterans who fought in support of United States (US) military operations in the Kingdom of Laos between February 28, 1961, and May 15, 1975, by issuing new registration plates commemorating the owner’s service in combat.
