News: $20,000 Donated To Get Laptops To Help Alaska’s Growing Foster Youth Population

Anchorage-Today Rep. Les Gara (D-Anchorage) announced a major donation to the “Laptops for Foster Youth” effort. The goal is to get needed laptop computers to Alaska’s growing number of foster youth. A few years ago there were roughly 1,700 foster youth in Alaska. Today there are approximately 2,200 foster youth in the state.

ANCHORAGE - Today Rep. Les Gara (D-Anchorage) said legislators could have avoided the major staff cuts the Anchorage School District is facing according to their recently released tentative “3 year” forecast. That forecast shows a loss of over 500 teachers and staff over the next three years.

The delayed-again City Planning and Zoning Commission Public Meeting on GCI’s proposed cell tower in South Addition has been, well, delayed. It’s now been moved to October 6 so there is time for a meeting in September at the South Addition Community Council.

Note from Rep. Gara: Some ABCs on Volunteering To Help Alaska’s Students

I wasn’t thrilled that the Legislature continued three years of educator cuts for yet another three years. In Anchorage we’ll lose roughly 400, or more, staff over the next three years, on top of over 600 staff lost statewide since 2011. While I voted to reverse these party-line cuts, it doesn’t mean we can’t work as individuals to help increase student opportunity, even if a majority of your elected leaders won’t.
