It’s been a coastal kind of week for me. I attended a federal workshop in Washington, D.C. on coastal and marine spatial planning. Meanwhile, I was working hard with other legislators to ensure that we meet the deadline to save the Alaska Coastal Management Program. Yesterday, a special session was announced – so don’t be surprised if you see a bunch of legislators walking around Juneau on Monday.

Crime Bills Signed Into Law
Today Governor Sean Parnell signed two important crime bills into law today. House Bill 127 is an omnibus crime bill that contains many provisions updating Alaska’s laws about stalking and crimes against children and vulnerable adults. This bill includes my proposal to update Alaska’s computer privacy laws to make it illegal to use a keystroke logger to steal information as it is being entered into a computer. Previously, it was only illegal to hack into a computer or network to steal the information.

Common hacking method, keystroke logging, becomes illegal July 1
Today Governor Sean Parnell made keystroke logging, a common computer hacking method, illegal when he signed HB 127, the omnibus crime bill, into law. This language, which was originally proposed by Reps. Pete Petersen and Lindsey Holmes (both D-Anchorage), updates Alaska’s computer hacking laws to make it illegal to use a keystroke logger to steal information as it is being entered into a computer.

Holmes to Meet with U.S. President, White House Officials
Meetings to include policy briefs, Presidential Reception
Anchorage—Representative Lindsey Holmes travels to Washington D.C. this week to meet with senior White House and Administration officials, followed by a reception with President Obama in the White House. The discussions will cover such critical topics as the economy and energy policy. Rep. Holmes is part of a small group invited to this unique event as a member of the Young Elected Officials Network.
