Rep. Kawasaki’s Juneau Note: Mining and Fishing; Parent University;
A recent local initiative by people of the Bristol Bay community banned development that would have “significant adverse impacts” on the region’s resources. The vote of 280 to 246, was a direct response to a debate about mining and fishing that is sure to be a topic of debate in Juneau this year.

Rep. Kawasaki’s Juneau Note: Ice Dogs Champs, Safe Routes, and Seniors
On Friday, I, along with Representative Thompson, had the distinct honor to present a Legislative Citation to the Ice Dogs Hockey Team for winning the NAHL West Championship Title. I saw the 2011 Robertson Cup trophy and can say it is very impressive! Congratulations to all of the players, staff and fans and good luck this season.
A Legislative Citation is a way the Legislature can pay tribute to people and businesses who have achieved a level of distinction in their respective fields, or have made a recognizable impact on their community. Rep. Kerttula’s Juneau Newsletter: SLAM Groundwork Begins
This week, I was honored to join the rest of the Juneau Legislative Delegation and other members of the Juneau community in celebrating the “soft” groundbreaking on the State Libraries, Archives and Museum (SLAM) project adjacent to the current State Museum. Though the project has not yet been completely funded, enough design work has been done to start some groundwork to get the project underway. In this newsletter, I’ll share with you some thoughts about SLAM and some photos from the ceremony.
Thank you for reading my newsletter. I appreciate hearing from you, so please stop by the office, call, write or email.

Here’s some good news and bad news. I’ll give you the bad news first-because, well, it’s not that bad. Don’t jump before you get to the good news. Ooh. That’s a bad sentence. Don’t jump at all, even after you get to the good news. That’s better.
Oh, and thanks to at least two of you for voting to make me an Anchorage Press Pick as Anchorage’s “Favorite Legislator”. Maybe even more than two of you sent in votes? I’ve been trading this award with Mike Doogan, I think, um, because most of those Anchorage Press newspaper racks are in our districts?

Rep. Petersen’s Report from the Capitol: Important Highway Safety Hearing this Week; Anchorage Transportation Plan Under Review; How to Get Local Park Info on Your Smartphone
One the most dangerous pieces of Alaska’s highway infrastructure is the Glenn Highway/ Muldoon overpass right here in East Anchorage. The opening of the Tikahtnu Commons mall has made this already dangerous intersection even worse, and Senator Bill Wielechowski and I worked hard to secure the funding to start the process to fix this intersection. Unfortunately Governor Parnell vetoed this funding. While I agree that budget vetoes had to be made, I found this one to be baffling since this is a state owned intersection that clearly needs to be fixed.
