ANCHORAGE – The thirteen members of the Alaska Independent Democratic Coalition are excited to welcome President Barak Obama to Alaska this week. The President is scheduled to speak tonight at the GLACIER conference at the Dena’ina Center in Anchorage followed by trips to rural Alaska later this week. The GLACIER conference, which is focused on the Arctic, will include foreign dignitaries and experts on Arctic issues.

ANCHORAGE – The cable television channel TLC, in partnership with two leading child abuse prevention organizations, will air a new documentary later this month exploring the challenges faced by the victims of child sexual abuse. Rep. Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) has been working on solutions to the epidemic rate of child sexual abuse in Alaska and is encouraging Alaskans to watch “Breaking the Silence” Sunday, August 30 at 6 pm Alaska time.

On Wednesday, August 5th, I will be speaking at a free teleconference seminar to help raise awareness about plastic microbeads and their impacts on the environment. As many of you will remember I sponsored House Bill 14, which would ban the use of microbeads in cosmetics in Alaska. Last week, Governor Walker announced that he will use his executive authority to expand Medicaid and improve access to affordable healthcare to all Alaskans. While the Legislative Budget and Audit Committee now has 45 days to respond to the Governor’s decision, the Attorney General and the Legislature’s attorney agree that the Governor is within his Alaska Constitutional authority to accept Medicaid expansion. This decision is good for Alaska.
