Note from Rep. Gara: Public Testimony on Oil Tax; Pushing for Parking for Anchorage Hikers

On Monday, the House Finance Committee held a hearing where only those who support the Governor’s $2 billion per year oil tax rollback were invited to speak. On Thursday and Friday, you get your chance to speak out; something I think should have been allowed at Monday’s hearing. Testimony will be held at your city’s Legislative Information Office (716 W. 4th Ave. in Anchorage) Thursday, March 24, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Friday, March 25, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Gara and French Push Solution for Glen Alps and Powerline Pass Parking Problem

Legislators seek governor’s help inserting funds into the budget

Representative Les Gara and Senator Hollis French (both D-Anchorage) are asking Governor Sean Parnell for help solving the major parking problems at Glen Alps, a popular Anchorage recreation area. The legislators asked the governor to support their efforts to include funding for more parking in this year’s budget. This past summer, overflow parking was banned for the first time, blocking access to this area for thousands of Alaskans.

Gasoline prices are back in the national news, but in Alaska high gas prices have been an issue that hasn’t gone away. Since 2008 Alaskan gas prices have consistently been the highest in the nation, excluding state taxes, even though we produce more oil per capita than any other state. It didn’t use to be this way, as early as March 2007 Anchorage actually had the lowest gas prices of any city in the country.
