The Gardens are Opening!
Winter is waning, spring is creeping in, and the Gardens at Bragaw are opening! The Anchorage Community Land Trust announced the opening of a new community garden this year. The garden is on Bragaw between 4th Ave and the Glenn Highway. Registration for Garden plots will take place on March 30th and April 6th at the Mountain View Library from 11 AM to 1 PM. I can’t wait to see you all in the garden this summer! If you have any questions, call the Anchorage Community Land Trust at 748-5848.

This week, the House Finance committee is reviewing the operating budget for the State of Alaska. This is the time for you to comment. Below, I’ve highlighted a few changes to programs that may or may not affect you.
Make your voice heard
If you’re located in Anchorage, they will be hearing testimony on the Operating Budget from 4 – 5:15 PM on Tuesday, March 4. To testify, go to the Anchorage Legislative Information Office located at 716 W 4th Ave. Public comment will be LIMITED TO 2 MINUTES EACH. Please limit your testimony to this time.

Getting our fair share: Production before Reduction
A key issue this session is getting our fair share for our resources. This week, the Senate and House Democrats introduced a proposal to ensure new production before reduction. I am proud to be a sponsor of HB 111. This bill will strengthen our economy, ensure a fair return on our oil, and get more oil to the market. This bill will protect Alaska’s savings and won’t break the bank while doing it!

NO FRANKENFISH!
I introduced a resolution this week that would urge congress and the federal government to ban the sale of GMO salmon, you can read about it or read the resolution. If you want to show your support, send us an email and we’ll share it with the Fisheries Committee. Meanwhile, Sen. Begich is fighting against the sale of genetically modified salmon too. Contact him and let him know that you support his efforts. The comment period is closing in a couple of weeks, and we hope that you’ll voice your opinion. Your voice can be the difference that protects our Alaskan livelihood against frankenfish.

Rep. Geran Tarr’s Newsletter: Two Weeks In…
The past two weeks have been a whirlwind of activity. On January 15, I was sworn in on the floor and signed the Oath of Office with the lieutenant governor.
Accompanying me to the signing of the Oath of Office were my two staffers, Joe Caissie and Monica Southworth. Joe has experience with economics and possesses a keen interest in resource development in Alaska. Last year he was a law clerk for Justice Christen on the Alaska Supreme Court. Monica is a life-long Alaskan, originally from Unalaska, AK. She has worked in the legislature for the past two years and I’m excited to have both of them as my legislative team.
