Today, Tuesday January 20, 2015 marks the beginning of the twenty-ninth legislative session. And what a session it promises to be! I’ll be keeping you updated throughout, and I appreciate hearing from you. Here are some quick highlights from the office to kick things off.

The UAS/high school course “Introduction to Mining Occupations and Operations” will start on Monday January 26, 2015, be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:15 - 6:00 pm, and will conclude on April 15. The University awards 3 UAS credits to students who successfully complete the course and provides full scholarship to pay all the costs of the course.

Personally, 2014 has been an exciting year filled with big changes and lots of hard work. The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) has extended the public comment period for the Juneau Access Improvements Project Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) to November 25.
Read More →The Department of Education has released nine draft regulation changes resulting from HB 278 (the education omnibus bill), HB 210 (dealing with regulating the use of restraints or seclusion), HB 154 (designating natural and cultural history repositories) and a move to have consistency in math credit requirements.

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) has announced a change in the boundaries for its regions. Currently, DOT&PF has the state divided into the Central, Northern, and Southeast Regions. The Southeast Region will be renamed the “Coastal Region” and it will be expanded to include the majority of the coastal communities along the gulf and out the chain. However, those coastal communities that are connected to the state highway system that are under the Central Region or the Northern Region will remain under those regions.

I have had a very busy summer, and now fall is in the air. My daughter is back in school, and has her first swim meet this weekend.
In early August, I attended the Council of State Governments meeting in Anchorage where I participated in sessions on retirement plans, marijuana initiatives, economic development, healthcare and state legislation. I was able to learn an amazing amount about issues and statutory solutions in other states, some of which could benefit Alaskans.
Read More →With the summer well upon us, I hope everyone is able to stay dry, warm and safe! I have been traveling around the district listening to and hearing from everyone as I go. I spent some time in Skagway hosting a constituent meeting and speaking before the Skagway Assembly. I also had an opportunity to host a constituent meeting here in Juneau with Senator Egan. I traveled to Gustavus for their Centennial Celebration and toured the Falls Creek Hydro facility and the Gustavus Disposal and Recycling Center.
